Serena Practices on Wheels with Jewels

As Venus Williams recovers from her knee injury, she recently played Brenda Schultz-McCarthy in an exhibition, Serena also seems to be doing better. Photographs of the younger sister have surfaced showing her hitting the practice courts… on wheels?!

Yes, that’s correct. As you can see, Serena’s all-decked out and hitting a volley. It’s great to see her continuing to fight on the court despite this health issue.

Plus, she’s doing it in style. The Women’s Tennis blog reports that the cast she’s practicing with is adorned with Swarovski crystals. If you squint, there’s also a ballet slipper.

After beginning 2010 by defeating Justine Henin, Serena looked unstoppable. She next made the quarterfinals at the French Open and won Wimbledon. The severe cut to her right foot, however, put a stop on all future play. Sadly, she was forced to withdraw from the US Open and the 2011 Australian Open.

Serena confirmed the following in November, “As I continue to rehabilitate my foot after the second surgery last month, it is with the utmost regret that I am withdrawing from the Hopman Cup and the 2011 Australian Open Championships.” She continued, ““As I recently learned, pushing myself back into my intense training too early only caused me further injury and damage. While I desperately want to be back on the court and competing in the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, it is imperative for my health that I continue to work with my doctors to ensure my foot heals properly. This decision, though heavy on my heart, is the right one. I am praying for a healthy recovery and I promise my Aussie fans and my fans around the world that I will be back better than ever as soon as I can be.”

Again, it’s good that Serena’s taking slow steps and practicing any way she can. Hopefully, we continue to see these strong efforts by the Williams sisters as they overcome these injuries.

Venus Plays in Battle of the Biggest WTA Servers

Posted in Brenda Schultz-McCarthy,Venus Williams by Ben on December 28, 2010

Despite being sidelined from the tour with a knee injury since the US Open, Venus Williams played an exhibition match against Brenda Schultz-McCarthy in a match of the two biggest WTA servers.

A recent article on the exhibition reported, “Schultz-McCarthy claimed her place as the fastest server in WTA history in July 2006, recording a 130 mph serve during a qualifying tournament in Cincinnati, Ohio. Venus Williams hit the fastest recorded serve in a women’s tour main-draw match, reaching 129 mph at the 2007 French Open.”

The event, which was held at the BallenIsles Country Club, also featured a charity exhibition in which “Club Members [had] a rare opportunity to try and return the fastest serves in professional tennis, while supporting a worthy cause.”

While it’s great seeing Venus playing again, it’s still unknown whether she can commit to the Australian Open, which begins in less than a month.

Watch below for a video of Venus’ serve motion.

Also, here’s an example of Schultz-McCarthy’s huge serve.
