Nadal Races Through First Grass Match in a Year

With an easy 6-2, 6-2 win over the relative nobody Marcos Daniel, Rafael Nadal sends out a clear message to the rest of the field in the AEGON Championships and for the future grass court season: he’s  back and ready to challenge anyone at any time.

After missing last year’s season due to his disappointing fourth round Roland Garros defeat and knee injury, Nadal feels the need to prove himself at Wimbledon and show everyone he’s ready to rock the tennis world once more. With the Roland Garros trophy rightfully restored and his confidence on an upswing, there’ll be little to stop him this year. His one major nemesis: Roger Federer. But Federer’s not looking so hot right now. With an early lost to Robin Soderling in Paris, maybe Federer is looking just a tad vulnerable, especially after an otherwise underwhelming clay season for the greatest of all time.

While it’d be ridiculous to discount Federer when Wimbledon rolls around, let’s just say things won’t be smooth sailing to get to the final, or take home the title, with a revved up Rafa. And, yes, I’m calling prematurely for a Federer – Nadal final at the grass major. I don’t see the likes of Andy Roddick or Robin Soderling among a slew of other big hitters making the final this year.

Of course, all we can do is wait and see. Luckily, the time between the French and Wimbledon is short — very short.
